At 6am
For instance this was a 4 room house for the families who came in 1942 to build ships for the war.
Then this is a 6 room house though some had an upstairs for the bigger families.
This is the home of my host Helen, she is very influential in some of the local philantropic activities particularly to do with the Academy - the high school.
This morning I woke up to this. The first car is mine.
No idea how I'll get to my final destination in NS.
The live feed for the roads is not up yet.
At 10.30 Helen and Beth picked me up for a marvellous drive around Pictou. Beth has lived here all her life so told me the history of its development from a tiny Mi kMaw settlement through various influxes of Europeans especially during the 19th C then WW2 and later the pandemic. All this is revealed in the housing.
The state of some roads remind me of home.
Then as people rose up the social ladder these were built.
An early Presbyterian Church as many of thse who came were from Scotland in the 19th C then Catholics came during the 1940s having many children. There is a large stone building in town which was the convent for the nuns. Then a maternity unit had to be set up for all those babies. Another big stone building was the gaol now a BandB and a third is the Courthouse.
During the pandemic there was another increase in population as people wanted to escape the city. Houses prices went up as a result but you can still buy a reallg nice property facing the water for around 400000.
The old Academy building which was first built in 1816.Helen paid for a centennial stone on the foreground
Here are at lunchtime.
We also saw the shipyards.
Then in Stewiaki I stayed here
